Audition Tips from Our CREW and Judges

Welcome to the audition season! Whether you’re auditioning for a studio, a competition team, or a major performance, preparation is key. We’ve gathered expert advice from our experienced CREW members and esteemed judges to help you shine at your next audition. Read on for insider tips on how to stand out and deliver a memorable performance.

Be confident in yourself! Don’t let others or the choreography or material intimidate you!”

“It’s not always about your ability that gets you the part or on a team. It’s the amount of time you’re willing to put in and how much you are willing to work, grow, and learn!”

“Instead of trying to be perfect focus on personality and applying corrections. People want someone pleasant to be around and someone that can mold into their image.”

“Don’t think too hard about what you are going to do/say, just be yourself!”

“Have fun, breathe, stand out with your movements, have confidence in yourself.”

“Arrive early. Give yourself plenty of time to warm up, stretch, walk through the combo, and get comfortable with the environment!”

“Be yourself! Dress appropriately for the audition, but something that makes you feel confident, because the more confident you are the better you dance!”

“Don’t forget to be yourself! Use your strengths, remember your technique, but most importantly have fun! Sometimes when we audition for something we forget to put ourselves in our audition. Everyone struggles with wanting to be perfect, but a lot of the time they aren’t looking for someone who is perfect. They are looking for someone who is being their self and thoroughly enjoying what they are doing!”

“Always show the best version of yourself!! Be attentive and confident and be someone choreographers want to work with!!! Also always show your own style in improv and any other opportunities!!”

“Don’t worry about looking silly, just be yourself, try to learn lots, and dance your heart out! Don’t worry if you aren’t front row center, I can promise you they will split you up into groups where you will be able to be in the front or at least seen. Be sure to improv the way you feel in the moment and really show your emotion and use your personality.”

“Staying hydrated and always having a positive attitude.”

“Be ready and prepared for anything! Always arrive early! If you get there on time, you are late! Always dress appropriately!”

“No matter what, be confident! Even if you mess something up, make it look like you meant for it to happen!”

“Be confident in who you are as a dancer and know that even if the outcome is a ‘no’, that you still gained valuable feedback and critiques.”

“Always be yourself and make sure to smile!“

“If you get nervous easily, don’t think about the audition part in the beginning. Learn the combo to the best of your ability and when it comes time to audition, do it the best you can”

“Try and do it full out as much as you can when learning (it helps the moves stick) and think about your improv beforehand, and don’t be scared to improv! It makes you stand out”

“Use facial expressions and your own style while doing the combo. Make sure you are doing the choreography correctly but add your personal style. Wear something that makes you confident, it doesn’t have to be flashy just so you can “stand out.” Your personality and dance will help you stand out.”

“Be kind to everyone, make friends, say hi to everyone, clap for audition groups, create an uplifting space (those are the kind of people auditioners want on teams)”

“Always show confidence. Make eye contact with the judges and smile. Dance with a lot of energy.”

Auditions can be nerve-wracking, but with preparation and the right mindset, you can approach them with confidence. Take these tips from our CREW members and judges to heart, and remember: every audition is a chance to learn, grow, and showcase your unique talent!
